What are constitutional amendment

Dear Student

Changes that are incorporated into a constitutional document to ensure that its provisions are updated with the passage of time are known as constitutional amendments.

Amendments are significant in a democratic country like India to make necessary changes to the structure of power sharing, institutional arrangements and welfare goals of the state with time. They are required to ensure that the objectives of the document remain synchronous with contemporary society and do not lapse into anachronism. They also reflect the changing aspirations of people that are addressed through amendments. Further, new challenges in governance arise constantly and certain unforeseen situations are also encountered. Problems that arise in contemporary society cannot be always solved within the framework of ideas that reflect a structure of a previous era. The provision of amendment allows the collective experience derived from day to day working of the Constitution to be absorbed into the document in order to maintain its vitality.
