what are coordinating conjunctions?

Coordinating conjunctions are coordinators that can join two words, clauses or sometimes even sentences.

For instance,

  • They can't play nor can they swim;

  • I reached early although I was not interested.

  • She lied yet she was arguing.

  • -1

Notice the following sentence:

  • Birds fly and fishes swim.

    In the given sentence, there are two independent statements or two statements of equal rank or importance. Thus, the conjunction joining these two statements or clauses of equal ran kis called a coordinating conjunction. It can be defined as a conjunction which joins together clauses of equal rank.
