what are EcoSan toilets

Eco – san is the short term representation of Ecological Sanitation. Eco San toilet is a type of sanitation where the human wastes are not washed away but treated and recycled to obtain the water and nutrient from waste and send it back to the environment.  After treatment the nutrients are added to the soil, water is returned to the land and solid matters are used as bio fuel. Eco san reduces health risks related to contaminated wastes and reduce groundwater pollution.

EcoSan toilets are the toilets which don't use water (or use very very less water) for flushing the human excetra. Such toilets treat the human excreta through various mechanisms which finally converts the human excetra into odourless waste which can used in making compost or as fuel else just dispose it.

As these toilets don't use water to flush the human exceta (or use only about 20% of water compared to that of traditional toilets), the sewage water production is greatly reduced and hence pollution of water bodies is greatly reduced.
