What are fossils? Why is petroleum called fossil fuel?

 Fossils are the remains of animals and plants which were buried underground many years ago. Fossil fuels are the fuels which are extracted from earth and used for different purposes.

Petroleum is called a fossil fuel because it was made from the remains of plants and animals. The energy in petroleum came from the energy in the plants and animals. That energy came from the Sun.

Petroleum is actually extracted from fossils in seas.
