what are fossils?

Fossils are the preserved traces of the organisms that once existed and now they are extinct. Fossils are formed because some organisms failed to decay completely and have remained preserved till today.

Fossils are very important for the study of the ancient organisms and also for studying evolution and for studying classification too.

Fossils are basically preserved remains of animals, plants and other organisms. Fossils can be found anywhere and can be of any size. The study of fossils helps scientists to figure out the creatures, climatic conditions, habitat that existed on earth millions of years ago. Fossils also tell us about the age of the rocks in which they were found buried since ages. They also tells the former position of continents and extinct rivers or other water bodies.

Hope this helps,
