When a particle is projected with an initial velocity $v_{o}$ to an angle θ with horizontal then its has two components one along horizontal and one along vertical.

Horizontal component = $v_{x}$ = $v_{o} \cos (θ)$ .

Vertical component = $v_{y}$ = $v_{o} \sin (θ)$ .

The horizontal component remains unchanged as there is no net force acting in that direction and this component gives the particle a horizontal displacement.

The vertical component initially decreases as force of gravity is acting in downward direction and at maximum height it becomes zero.This component gives a vertical displacement to particle.

Both components gives the particle a two dimensional motion called a projectile motion.
