What are lacunae???

Lacunae are present in both cartilage and bones. Cartilage is a connective tissue consisting of cells embedded in a matrix of chondrin. The matrix is deposited by cells called chondroblasts and possess many fine fibrils mostly made up of collagen. Eventually the chondroblasts become enclosed in spaces called lacunae. Similarly, in bones, bone cells, called osteoblasts are contained in lacunae which are present throughout the matrix. Fine canals containing cytoplasm connect the lacunae to each other and blood vessels passing through them provide the means by which osteoblasts exchange material.
