What are 'Mahajanapadas' ?

Dear Student,

a. Mahajanapadas refers to the great kingdoms or nations existing during Vedic period.
b. They existed in the ancient times from the 6th to 4th centuries BC.
c. Examples of Mahajanpadas are: Vajji, kashi, Malla, Chedi etc.
d. Rajas of Mahajanapadas built forts to protect from enemy attacks and also to showcase their strength and power.
e. Rajas also maintained army.
f. The rulers of Mahajanapadas appointed officials to collect taxes.

Dear student
When a rajan has annexed many janapadas it is called mahajanadpada . In short many janapadas is equal to a mahajanapadas.There were 16 mahajanapadas. Magadha was the strongest mahajanapada .
