What are molecular scissors? Explain their role in the process of recombinant DNA technology?

Molecular scissors are enzymes which cut the restriction ends of DNA. They cut the DNA at very specific places. The enzyme gets active only when it reads a particular sequence on the DNA molecule. In common language they are also called restriction enzymes. They may be endonucleases or exonucleases.
