what are mutually exclusive events?

Dear Student!

Two of more events associated with a random experiment are said to be mutually exclusive events if the occurrence of  any one of them prevents the occurs of all others i.e. if no two or more of them can occur simultaneously in the same trial.

Suppose a coin is tossed. Consider the following events.

A : Getting a head

B : Getting a tail

Here, A and B are mutually exclusive events because a head and a tail cannot be obtained at the same time.

Cheers!
