What are phytoplankton & zooplankton? Can anyone tell me

Dear student,

Phytoplanktons are small floating single celled organisms that are found in water bodies. Phytoplanktons are at the base of the aquatic food chain. When present in high enough numbers, they may appear as a green discoloration of the water due to the presence of chlorophyll within their cells.

Zooplanktons are tiny heterotrophic organisms which float along the surface of oceans, seas and various aquatic environments. Usually they are very small to be seen with the naked eyes yet there is an exception of Jelly fish is large enough to be seen with the naked eyes. For example corals, rotifers are zooplanktons.

The basic difference between phytoplankton and zooplankton is that the word ‘phyto‘ is used for the small plants like diatoms and algae and word ‘zoo‘ is used for the small animals like tiny fish, crustaceans, which are the weak swimmers and just move along the currents.
