what are supraoptic and paraventricular nuclie of the hypothalamus?

Dear student,
Eleven nuclei are present in the hypothalamus. Depending upon the position nuclei have been named. Paraventricular nucleus are located in the periventricular zone and supraoptic nuclei are located above optic chiasm in anterior region of medial zone. Paraventricular neurons gets activated by stressful situation and physiological changes. Paraventricular neuron releases oxytoxin. It plays role in autonomic nervous system.
Supraoptic nucleus are the neurosecretory cells which plays roles in neuro endocrine regulation. It releases antidiuretic hormone.

The supraoptic nucleus (SON) is a nucleus of magnocellular neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus of the mammalian brain. The nucleus is situated at the base of the brain, adjacent to the optic chiasm. In humans, the SON contains about 3,000 neurons.
