What are the benefits of layering and tissue culture?

Artificial methods of vegetative propagation are man - made and developed by plant growers and Horticulturists for commercial production of crops. Layering is one of the common artificial methods. In layering, roots are artificially induced on stem branches before they are detached from the parent plant for propagation.

  • Economical  and quick method

 

Tissue culture is a propagation method used to produce plants under sterile conditions. This method uses plant parts (Explants) that have been sterilized before being placed in suitable suspension medium to grow.

Advantages/benefits:

 

  • This technique is employed for quick manipulation of commercially important plants such as Orchids, Dahlia etc.
  • Micro propagated plants are free from viruses and show increased productivity and yield.

  • Large numbers of plants can be produced from a single, or a few stock plants.
  • Micropropogated plants can be produced at any time of the year, and so can be sold out of season at a higher price. 
  • Plant diseases can be avoided as meristematic tissue is virus free and bacteria free - it lacks vascular tissue so it is much less likely to get disease.
  • Plants such as orchids which are difficult to grow from seed in large amounts can be produced in large amounts and sold at a reasonable price
  • Plants can be designed to order - for example the plant Ficus which can be produced in a single or multi-stemmed form
  • Standardising growing condirions means standard batches of plants are produced - a sales advantage
  • Micropropogated plants are small and lightweight so can be freighted easily and cheaply
  • Some fruit and nut trees have a juvenility problem where they cannot produce fruit for between 5 and 20 years - cloning by tissue culture overcomes this.

Layering

Layering can happen naturally. When lower branch or fallen part of trees is contacting with soil, adventitious roots will form at the point that the branch and the soil are contacting. With the adventitious roots, an individual plant will grow. Because the individual tree is fallen from original tree, they are genetically identical.

Air layering happens artificially. When a gardener covers a wounded tree with wrap, moist will form around the wrap. Because of the moist, new adventitious roots will grow near by the wounded place.

 

Tissue Culture

Tissue culture occurs placing explants (piece of leaf, or cotyledon, or embryo) on hormones, sugars, amino acids, and micronutrients. After tissue culture, adventitious buds are produced. When it is growing well, it will grow as an individual plant. Taking out cells from a plant and growing the cells in nutrient liquid are another form of tissue culture. This method is used for genetic engineering. Tissue culture is useful method for horticulture, but it is hard method to use.
