What are the causes and measures of poverty?

Dear student,
The causes of poverty are:
1. High rate of population growth.
2. Low rate of economic development.
3. Increase in unemployment particularly in rural area.
4. Concentration of power in hands of upper class of the society.
5. High rate of illiteracy, especially in rural area.
6. The rise in prices of essential commodities.
7. Inequalities of income and wealth, is making rich richer and poor poorer.

​​​​​Suitable Measures to reduce Poverty are:-
i)Employment opportunities
ii)Establishment of Small Scale Industries
iii)Education
iv)Proper Utilization of Resources
v)Reduce Population growth

The first specific and scientific attempt of identify the poor and to measure the extent of poverty was made by an expert committee constituted by the government of India in July 1962. It has put the nationally desirable minimum level of consumer expenditure at Rs. 20 per capita per month according to 1960-61.

The planning commission have setup a working group in 1962 to find out a desirable minimum level of living for the population. the working group recommend the minimum consumption of 5 persons in a household as Rs. 100 for rural areas and Rs. 125 for urban areas.
