what are the chemical tests to distinguish between
- phenol & benzyl alcohol
- propanol & 2-methyl butan-2-ol
- phenol & aniline
1. Ferric chloride test- Phenol gives a violet colour with neutral FeCl3 solution whereas benzyl alcohol doesnot react with FeCl3 solution.
2.Lucus reagent test - Add Lucas reagent(conc.HCl + anhydrous ZnCl2).Primary alcohol propanol doesnot turn cloudy at room temperature whereas tertiary alcohol 2-methyl butan-2-ol becomes cloudy immediately.
3. Ferric chloride test - Phenol gives a violet colour with neutral FeCl3 solution whereas aniline doesnot give any colour.
