what are the different steps of Solvay's process for the manufacture of washing soda? give its important uses.
The different steps used in solvey's process is given as:
Step 1: The calcium carbonate is heated at 950 - 1100 °C to produce carbon dioxide gas as
CaCO3 -> CO2 + CaO
Step 2:, CO2 passes through a concentrated aqueous solution of sodium chloride (NaCl) called as brine and ammonia (NH3).
NaCl + CO2 + NH3 + H2O -> NaHCO3 + NH4Cl
Step 3: The ammonium chloride (NH4Cl) is filtered from step2 solution, and the solution is then reacted with the calcium oxide (CaO).
2NH4Cl + CaO --> 2NH3 + CaCl2 + H2O
Step 4: The sodium bicarbonate precipitated from the solution of step2, is then heated (calcination) at 160 - 230 °C to produce washing soda (Sodium carbonate) as:
2NaHCO3 --> Na2CO3 + H2O +CO2
Use : It is used in glass making, softening of water, preparation of soap and detergents and as common alkali in many chemical factories as it is cheaper.
