What are the effects of el nino?

Dear student,

Here is the answer:

‘El Nino’ is a Spanish word meaning ‘the child. It is a phenomenon in which a warm ocean current flows past the Peruvian Coast, in place of the cold Peruvian current. It leads to an increase in sea-surface temperatures and it also weakens the trade winds in the region. This cycle lasts for 2 to 9 years.

It affects the intensity of monsoonal conditions in India. During El Nino, warm currents flow towards the eastern edge of South Pacific Sea towards Chile and Peru in South America. The warm currents cause a low pressure area which attracts moisture laden monsoon winds from the Indian Ocean resulting in a weakened monsoon in Southeast Asia and Africa.
