what are the factors which affect echoand how?

Factors affecting echo are:

  1. Distance between the sound source and the reflecting body and the observer. Minimum distance in case of air is 17.2 m. For distances smaller than this value we won’t hear echo.
  2. Angle between the sound source and the reflecting body. If the sound source is perpendicular to the reflecting surface then the echo heard is distinct.
  3. Reflectivity of the surface reflecting the sound. If the reflectivity of the reflecting surface is low then the sound waves will be absorbed by the surface instead of reflection.
  4. The speed of sound in the medium through which the sound is passing. Faster the speed of sound in the medium earlier the echo is heard.
  5. Scattering of sound waves by the medium. If the medium scatters the sound waves then there would be no observable echo as the intensity of the reflected sound wave will be very low.

how do they affect ?

  • Temperature - At high temperature echo can be heard more fastly than low temperature.
  • Humidity - At less humidity echo can be heard fastly than low humidity.
  • Distance - Echo can only be at a minimum distance of 17.2m at 20 degree celcius and at less than 17.2m echo can not be heard.
