What are the functions of the oval window and round window of ears? How is ear wax secreted in our ear?

  • The oval window (vestibular window) is a membrane-covered opening which leads from the middle ear to the vestibule of the inner ear. It amplifies the vibrations over twenty times from what they were when they contacted the tympanic membrane, a testament to the amplifying power of the middle ear.

  • The round window is one of the two openings into the inner ear. It consists of a small opening between the ear canal and the inner ear, covered in a flexible membrane. When pressure builds up inside the ear, the round window helps to relieve the pressure.

  • The skin in the outer ear canal has special glands that produce earwax.
