heterocysts funcyion as sites for nitrogen fixation under aerobic conditions
they are formed in response to lack of nitrogen.
mature heterocysts lack PSII hence cannot produce oxygen however they do contain PSI so they can carry out cyclic photophosphorylation and ATP regeneration. These changes provide appropriate conditions for functioning of oxygen sensitive nitrogenase
