What are the major challenges to democracy?

As per any democracy, there are three challenges to democracy:

  • Challenges of foundation
  • Challenges of expansion
  • Challenges of deepening

In India's case, she has faced the first challenge which is foundational challenge and now is faced with remaining two that are challenges of expansion and deepening which include:

  • Secularism
  • Political culture
  • Urbal rural disparity

  • Foundational challenges deals with the problems that arise at the time of establishment of democracy. Military regimes go through revolutions before democracy is brought into system.
  • Challenges of expansion deals with the problem of spreading democracy in other areas across the region. Most democracies face this issue. For example, the right to information was brought about after a lot of debate.
  • Deepening of democracy deals with the strengthening the institutions and practices of democracy like decreasing the inequalities of income.
