What are the monasteries of the Jainas and buddhists

Dear Student,

All Buddhist and Jain monks went from place to place to spread their religion , but during rainy seasons they needed shelter and had to stay at one place until the rains were over. To help these monks, their supporters build shelters for them in gardens . Many monks also lived in caves. When some monks and nuns realised the they might need a permanent settlement, so monasteries also known as Viharas were built These Viharas had Indian rock-cut architecture. Sites such as Ajanta Caves, Kanheri Caves, Aurangabad caves and Karli Caves contains several viharas. Viharas were originated to be shelters for monks during rainy season.

Regards.
