Igneous rock:  They are formed by cooling and solidification of hot lava or magma. It is formed when there is volcanic activity. They were one of the first rocks to be formed  thus, also known as primary rock.

Sedimentary rock: they are formed by the deposition of sediments carried by rivers, moving ice etc. Over a period of time , they compress and harden to form rocks. Due to this periodic compression they are layers formed with in the rock.

Metamorphic rocks :  Igneous and sedimentary rocks due to heat and pressure change their physical and chemical properties, these rocks are known as metamorphic rocks, this process takes many many years. Eg: limestone changes to marble.

Intrusive igneous rocks -They are formed by the cooling of molten magma deep inside the earth's surface. These rocks have karge grains as they cool down slowly. e.g. Granite.

Extrusive igneous rocks-  They are formed by cooling of the lave on the surface of the earth. These rocks have fine grains. e.g. Basalt.
