Various measures taken by the government of India to empower the consumers in India :
  • The government first enacted the COPRA (Consumer Protection Act) in the year 1986. The act provides for the establishment of consumer dispute reddressal mechanisms at district, state and national level.
  • The Right to Information Act (15 June, 2005) was enacted by the Government of India. It empowers the citizen to ask questions from government or seek any information, take copies of any government document or inspect any government documents. The RTI act promoted transparency and accountability of every public authority.
  • Enactment of Bureau of International Standards Act 1986 was enacted for the harmonious development of the activities of standardisation, marking and quality certification of goods.
  • The Public Distribution System Scheme (1997), which was a food security scheme which apart from other important functions also prevents hoarding and black marketing.
