What are voids? How many types of voids are there?
A void is the empty space left between the spheres during their packing in a crystal lattice.
In cubic closed packing, there are two types of voids:
Tetrahedral void - A void in a lattice which is surrounded by four spheres is called a tetrahedral void. The four spheres surrounding the void are arranged on the corners of a regular tetrahedron.
Octahedral void- A void in a lattice which is surrounded by six spheres is called an octahedral void. The six spheres surrounding the void are arranged on the corners of a regular octahedron.
