What did Gandhiji do for the social and cultural upliftment of Champaran ?

Dear Student,

Upon solving the misery of peasants and making them self reliable, Gandhiji wanted to improve the social and cultural conditions of Champaran as well. The backwardness prompted him to take necessary actions and seek the help from teachers and volunteers across the country to help with the efforts.
Primary schools were opened in six villages of Champaran and an appeal was made for teachers. Gandhiji's pupils Mahadev Desai and Narhari Parikh, and their wives, along with teachers from distant parts of the country like Mumbai, Pune, offered to work. Gandhiji's son Devdas and his wife Kasturba Gandhi, also came forward and took lead in teaching the ashram rules on personal cleanliness and community sanitation to the people. In addition, to improve the miserable health conditions of the villages, Gandhiji got a doctor who volunteered for six months. Kasturba Gandhi also taught women to wear clean clothes and get rid of their filthy ones.
This way, Gandhiji brought a wave of change, not only economically but socially and culturally, and helped in an overall development of the villages.
