Kalam's science teacher Sivasubramania Iyer was a rebel. Despite being an orthodox Brahmin, he did his best to break social barriers so that people from different castes and religions could mingle easily. He wanted Kalam to break the shackles of the social rigidities prevalent in Rameswaram. He wanted him to develop thoughts devoid of social prejudices and biases. He asked Kalam to weed out regressive ideas from his mindset so that his knowledge was on par with highly educated people of the big cities.
