What did Matilda mean by the statement"There was nothing more humiliating than to have a shabby air in the midst of rich women"?

Dear Student

Mme Loisel was worried that she did not have any jewellery to wear to the ball and complained about this to her husband. He suggested that she wear some flowers so that she would look pretty in it. But she responded saying that it was untidy to dress in that manner when she was amongst rich women.

Regards.
