what did the poet feel about heaven and hell in his childhood?

Markus Natten's poem "Childhood" reflects on the changes that a child undergoes as he grows up. However, according to the poet, this growing up is indicative of the loss of innocence. In the first stanza the poet wonders that did he grow up when he realized that "Heaven" and "Hell" are not tangible realities. His inability to locate them on a map made him wonder about their existence. The refrain "Was that the day" enhances the notion of the loss of innocence as a child grows up. The simplicity and honesty present in the manner in which a child perceives the world is lost as he grows up. According to the poet, innocence is the most precious quality of a child, but it is slowly leaves him, as he comes to terms with reality.
