An open circuit is the one through which no current flows as no path is available for it to flow. This could be either due to the fact that switch is not plugged in or the circuit has broken down. 

A closed circuit is the one through which current flows and path is provided for it to flow. A circuit is generally closed by plugging in a switch.

An electric circuit that has been broken, so that there is no complete path for current flow is known as open circuit.

An electric circuit providing an uninterrupted, endless path for the flow of current is known as closed circuit.

in any electric circuit when the key(switch) is off then it is called closed circuit

and

just like when the key(switch) is on then it is called open circuit
