The term Viceroy is derived from the Latin root word Vive meaning "in the place of" and the French word Roi, meaning king. Hence, Viceroy, was the representative of the monarch who ran the administration in his name.

Lord Canning was the first Viceroy of India and Lord Mountbatten was the last Viceroy of India.
