what do you think brings about a change of heart in the peddler?
The iron master mistook the peddler as his old acquaintance Captain Von Stalhe and invited him to his house for the Christmas Eve. However, when the reality comes out although the iron master was a bit annoyed, his daughter Edla treats him like a captain only. The peddler felt honoured by her kind treatment. He also thought that he had got a chance to transfer himself from a thief to a noble captain. He thought of leaving his dishonest ways. While going away from Edla’s house he left his rattrap as a Christmas gift, and also the thirty kronor which he had stolen. He wrote a letter to her saying that he did not want her to be embarrassed by a thief on the Christmas Eve, and that he wanted to be nice to her as a real captain would have been. He signs the letter impersonating the actual captain Von Stalhe.
