What do you think was the speaker's attitude towards Amanda?

Dear student
The attitude of the speaker towards Amanda is very nagging.
The speaker in the poem is one of Amanda's parents, who is teaching her how to be presentable and acceptable in society. But in doing so, the speaker is taking away the freedom and imagination of his/her child.
Amanda’s attitude is typical of a teenager. Teenagers can be rebellious and apparently hot-headed with a highly independent perspective. In such circumstances, yelling at them and nagging them, as done in the poem with Amanda, will only make matters worse. Forcing decisions on them only make them more detached as we see in Amanda’s case, where she wishes to be a love mermaid, an orphan or the lonely Rapunzell. She doesn’t want to listen to anyone.
