MTP is Medical Termination of Pregnancy. It is intentional or voluntary termination of pregnancy before full term growth of foetus. Also called induced abortion.
Has a role in decreasing population, become essential when continued pregnancy is fatal for mother or faetus or both. In india it is legal but with strict conditions so as to prevent female foeticide.
It is safe upto 12 weeks after implantation. After this time if MTP is carried out then it could be fatal for mother.
Unwanted pregnancy can be prevented by:
  1. Natural methods which includes periodic abstinance, coitus interruptus, lactational amenorrhea.
  2. Artificial methods which includes barrier methods ( condoms, cervical caps, vaults, diaphragms),spermicidal creams, IUD'S i.e Intra Uterine Devices ( Multiload 360, copper T) , Oral contraceptive pills (saheli, novestrol) and surgical methods (vasectomy and tubectomy)
