What do you understand by the term democracy?

Democracy is a type of government in which political control is exercised by the people, either directly or through their elected representatives. The word democracy was coined by the ancient Greeks who established a direct form of government in Athens. The principles of democracy include widespread participation of all adult citizens, consent of the governed on matters related to governance and public accountability of those in power. In a modern democracy, all adult men and women vote to elect their representatives.
