What do you understand by the term resistance? Explain why does a metal wore when connected to a cell offer resistance to the flow of current.

Dear Student,

resistance is a property of a conductor due to which it restricts the flow of current.
In a metal there are many free electrons and positively charged atoms. These free electrons move in any direction the like. But when the metal wire is connected to a battery, these electrons move in a definite direction. During their movement the collide with these positively charged atoms. Thus they do not move in an increasing speed. Thus the obstructions caused to the electrons during their movement is known as resistance.
