what does a clause mean ?

Hello,

A clause is a group of words with a subject and a predicate, which form a sentence. A clause might be dependant or independent.

A clause in a complex sentence that contains at least a subject and a verb and can stand alone syntactically as a complete sentence is known as the main clause. It conveys a complete thought. It is also called independent clause.
For instance,
-  Mark kicked the football;
-  They made a plan for this weekend.
-  Sam ate the jam in the bottle.

A subordinate clause is a clause with an adjectival, adverbial, or nominal function, rather than one that functions as a separate sentence in its own right.
Examples of the same are:
-  …because he was leaving;
-  …so that he could travel safely;
-  …as we reached late.
-  …although I didn’t say anything.

Hope this helps you with understanding the concept better.
Cheers!
