What does precursor mean?(eg. Natural precursor of cytokinin is zeatin) Please explain with more examples

Dear Student,

Precursor refers to the compound or molecule from which another compound or molecule is formed.

For example:
In the biosynthesis of Cytokinin, the isopentenyl group is transferred from Dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) to an adenosine monophosphate (AMP) using the enzyme isopentenyl transferase (IPT), thereby forming isopentenyl adenine ribotide. The naturally occurring Cytokinin is Zeatin.

Therefore adenosine moiety acts as precursor for its biosynthesis.
