what does the french teacher tell his students on the day of last lesson?what impact it had on them and why ?

The French teacher told the students that it was was his last lesson as an order from Berlin had come which stated that only German was to be taught in the schools of Alsace and Lorraine. The teacher talked about the value and beauty of French language which according to him was the most beautiful and logical language in the world. He told the students that they should guard their language because when people are enslaved  they hold the key to their prisons if they hold on to their language. He also talked about all the times they had lost without learning French. He also told them that the Prussians were going to mock at them for not speaking French but calling themselves Frenchmen. The students were saddened by the fact that they were not going to be able to learn French anymore. They also realised the value of their language and learn more since the Prussian soldiers were going to occupy their village. The narrator describes how the students became very attentive listening to their teacher who was teaching them patiently. They did not pay attention to anything else except writing their lessons.
