What does the poet mean by
"Open-handed map"
"Awarding the world its own world"???
Hi Rahul!
Basically the second stanza of this poem deals with the contrast between the children's dreary situation and the 'outside world' which they cannot be a part of due to their unfortunate condition. The maps on the walls of the classroom show the children all the beautiful places (like the Tyrolese valley) around the world. In a way, the maps are taunting the children; showing them a world which is completely different from theirs and one which they can only dream of seeing and experiencing.
