The last paragraph means that the narrator was in a ugly-middle position where he was unable to make his 4 yrs. daughter sleep and he was also not able to help his wife Clare(who was 6 mths. pregnant) to help in painting the chairs etc. or other furniture. The reason behind the narrator's tiredness was that the narrator got very tired in narrating the story to his daughter Jo i.e. the narrator doesn't want to speak, touch and to help her wife in doing any kind of work in which she was involved as the narrator got very-very tired and sleepy after narrating the story to his daughter Jo.
