what dows the author mean by "But promises like mine abound in every corner of his bleak world" ?

The narrator made a promise to Saheb that was not meant to be kept. The narrator realised her mistake and felt that Saheb's life (and of many others like him)  is already full of such promises but these promises are never fulfilled. His world remains as gloomy as ever because the promises are made and forgotten.
