- Protein was considered to be the genetic material earlier because chromosome was considered to be the hereditary material which consisted of protein and DNA. Protein was more heterogeneous consisting of 20 amino acids and they were functionally specific while DNA only consisted of four bases and very little was known about DNA. Therefore protein was considered as the genetic material.
