what function do the methanogens perform in the rumen of cattles ?

In the rumen of cattle methanogens act on the food ( act on carbon atoms present in it ) eaten by cattles and produce methane gas via normal fermentation process. This gas is released into the atmosphere when they exhale.

Methanogens are strict anaerobeswhich produce methane from carbon dioxide or formic acid...

rumen is the first stomach of cattles where cellulose is present in their food material fermented by microbes....in strong light they develop purple colour pigmented membrane which can utilize light energy to run their metabolic machinary by producing ATP

They play a vital role in strictly anaerobic condition to remove excess hydrogen and other fermented products...!!
