What had Franz expected would have enable him to get his seat unnoticed? How was he disappointed?

Usually, when school began, there was a great bustle which could be heard out in the street, the opening and closing of desks, lesson repeated in unison, very loud, with student's hands over their ears to understand better, and the teacher's great ruler rapping on the table and this is what Franz expected so that he could come in quietly and sit in the class but that day it was completely still . This fact disappointed him.
