Why we sneeze and cough

Dear Student,

Sneezing is caused by irritations in the nose; when you sneeze air goes very fast, normally getting rid of the irritation. These irritations can be caused by dust or other such things. Most dust or irritations don't get into your nose and reach lungs because of the tiny hairs that protect your inner nostrils. If at all some dust enters our nose, sneezing helps to get rid of it.

Coughing is a reflex action. It is triggered by some irritation causing stimuli activate the cough receptors present in different parts of respiratory system. As a result we cough.

Coughing and sneezing prevents any harmful foreign particles or irritant from entering our lungs; thus protecting our lungs.

The speed of cough and sneeze is quite high, so it is always advisable to cover the face with a handkerchief while sneezing and coughing.
