what happens when it is a collective noun and has a divided meanings

Then if the collective noun has a divided meaning, then the verb used is plural. Eg: The jury are divided in their views.  whereas, in this sentence, The jury is firm in it's decision the collective noun jury is considered as one so a singular verb is used. Another example is The family are fighting among themselves. So words like divided, fighting, separated etc indicate whether the collective noun used is considered as one or is it considered as separate.
