What is a kekule?

  • 2

Many compound can exist in more than one form i.e structures can be written in such a manner that the relative positions of all the atoms of compound remain the same but they difference in arrangement of covalent bonds. These are considered as the canonical forms called as Kekule structure such that all the structure should have the same number of bonds but with different position.
The structures of such compounds like benzene are the resonance hybrid of more then one Kekule structure.

Kekulé was the first to suggest a sensible structure for benzene. The carbons are arranged in a hexagon, and he suggested alternating double and single bonds between them. Each carbon atom has a hydrogen attached to it.
