It is one of the Three major refuges for Buddhists, along with Buddha and Dhamma. It was originally established by Gautama Buddha in order to provide a conducive environment to those willing to lead a monastic life and attain Nirvana. The monks who live in a Sangha practice the monastic order and follow the Buddhist path of Dhamma. The traditions practiced in a Sangha vary according to local customs.
