What is a thematic relationship between "The Portrait of a Lady" and "A Photograph "

The thematic relationship between the short story and the poem is the transience of human life and how we must take extra care of making the most with those we love. Death is not something that happens at the end of a long story, it can come as a surprise ending at any time in one's life. The author of the story rues the fact that he let his relationship with his grandmother go to waste while the poet of the poem ruminates upon the death of her mother and how a photograph seems like a poor relic to keep of someone she loved so dearly. Our memories, whether in the form of the anecdotes we remember or the photographs we have, are not enough to capture the essence of that person.
